The union of bank workers is unhappy with the way banks have laid of staff in recent times. Speaking to NEXT, the acting President of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial in Nigeria (ASSBIFI), Sunday Salako, said the manner in which the banks are laying off staff is unacceptable.Mr. Salako, who sounded very upset during a telephone interview with NEXT, said, "We know a mass sack is inevitable.
This is due to situation we have found ourselves, in terms of the infractions in the bank but what we are saying is that these organisations should follow due process."We are incapacitated in some areas, because if you don't have a union in a place, you cannot just go there and do anything there. If a place is not unionised, you cannot go there and take the necessary actions. So in areas where we don't have union structures, we are finding it difficult to penetrate into those places; when you want to engage in management actions, you need the in-house support.
